In her desperate search for sleep seventeen-year-old Eva does everything to stay the night at other peoples houses where she watches others sleep. When Eva is awake at night, she takes us to the darker side of normal life while forcing her family and friends to develop a different perspective on what they consider "normal".
MAGDALENA CHMIELEWSKA is an award-winning Polish-Austrian writer and film director living in Vienna. Her films have been screened at renowned international film festivals and have received numerous awards, including the Max Ophüls Award and the German Film Academy First Steps Award, the most important trophies for newcomers in the German-speaking world. In 2022, Chmielewska was selected as one of the ten most outstanding young European directors at the prestigious Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Her visual language manifests an expressive, visceral cinematic style that focuses on telling stories of human longing and loss, while revealing the otherness inherent in people. Her background in contemporary dance and physical theatre complements her methods of working with actors and non-actors, with whom she always creates uniquely real creations. Her work ranges from narrative cinema and hybrid documentaries to music videos and commercials. She studied at the Austrian State Film and Television School - Filmakademie Wien, where she learned from Jessica Hausner and Michael Haneke, among others.
